GWU Magazine Layouts

I had been working on the Gardner-Webb Magazine before I became an employee there and they had an established look, but after I was employed at GWU for two or three years I wanted to revamp the whole look of the magazine. I gave it a much more modern look style emphasizing on having our own photos, not stock, and giving the magazine more breathing room. I'll admit that it was a great learning process for me to find a good balance between telling the story in images and having the written story flow smoothly that the reader wants to read more. I'm proud of where I started with the magazine and where I ended. I understand it has taken on a new look now as well, but I know I helped lay
the foundation.

I was responsible for the entire layout of the magazine. From choosing the order of the stories, to the photos. I worked closely with our photographer to get the photos we needed and in some cases I took the photos myself.

Below is the cover that I designed when our university was getting rebranded and was getting a new logo. I wanted the cover to reflect that. The marketing company that designed the logo had done studies to try and see what makes GWU so special to the students, employees and the community. I took those words and made them a part of the logo to show that they were what the university stands for. I believe that it worked very well. I had the flame and colored words in a varnish to really stand out. I was actually awarded a Special Merit Award for this cover by CASE (Council For Advancement and Support for Education) for Graphic Design Cover.

Below are some of the different layouts through the years of me doing the magazine.
